she needs when she needs it is tough , and we will inevitably only get it right part of the time . But simply being aware that the entire staff won ’ t understand something after our brilliant lecture , or from one reading , or from a perfect PowerPoint may be enough to help us help our students .

If your media class looks a bit like a Warriors practice , with you wandering the room , checking in with reporters , offering quick advice , sharing a joke or a quick story ... well , that is great .
Great advising is less a stage performance and more an improv set . You know the big picture of what you would like to see , but all those individuals bring unique backgrounds and emotions . Your role is to step up to whatever situation you encounter .
Don ’ t forget “ Yes , and … ” as opposed to the reflexive “ No , because … ”

There is a tug-of-war in society , between those who are inclined to “ go it alone ,” who think of life as a battle , with clear winners and losers , and with those inclined to cooperate , who see collaboration as more powerful than individual brilliance ( though no one ignores individual brilliance ).

After advising newspaper and yearbook for 30 years , at Regina HS and City High in Iowa City and in Colorado at Heritage HS and Rock Canyon HS , Jack “ retired ” from the high school classroom in 2010 . In short time , he found himself leading the Colorado Student Media Association as executive director , teaching Composing Arguments for Metro State University of Denver , and teaching Professional & Technical Writing for Colorado State University . The college classes are online . He was the Dow Jones News Fund Journalism Teacher of the Year in 1993 , and his students have won hundreds of state and national individual awards and honors , as well as National Pacemaker and Best of Show awards from NSPA . He served on the Journalism Education Board for many years , and is a past president of JEA . He has taught the University of Iowa online publications advising course for many years . His last advising position was for the monthly magazine created by Slavens School 5th graders in the spring of 2016 . Those students were awesome !
