15 Students Paul O’Mara and Miriam Sachs conduct an interview with the family of Kim Phuc, featured in the famous “Napalm Girl” photograph. The interview helped connect a famous image to places and people still living in Vietnam, and created a discussion about the power of images to change public opinion. CAN’T TRAVEL TO CUBA? My students are fortunate enough to afford international trips, but everyone can create their own living history projects to push their staffs into unfamiliar territory. What neighborhood in your town is “off limits?” What immigrant or religious group lives under the radar of our dominant culture? Sometimes the other side of the world is just on the other side of the railroad tracks. Or on the other side of campus. Face to face encounters like this help students appreciate alternative perspectives and put a human face on the war. Mira Costa High School students Dylan Lenze and Sam Schwartz revise interview questions while traveling to the Mekong Delta. Students are organized into teams and choose their own topics for the documentaries.
