Alas , as we climb higher up the digital media ladder , copy editing is given less time and copy editors are losing their jobs at an accelerated rate . As the briefest time online shows , copy editing is needed more than ever . The Internet and mobile communications make it easy to spread poorly written , inaccurate , even libelous information instantaneously . McLendon has had to stop teaching some things due to so many more demands for students ’ time . Copy editors in high school and beyond must be engaged and deliberate .

Career Cues is a quarterly column by Linda Shockley , managing director of the Dow Jones News Fund . She joined the Fund as assistant to the director in 1988 and was named deputy director in 1992 . She holds a bachelor ’ s degree in journalism from the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut . Before joining Dow Jones , she worked as a reporter , editor , bureau chief and city editor for Gannett-owned newspapers in Westchester County , New York . Reach her at 609-520-5929 .
While the best known stylebooks are from the Associated Press , The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal , none compares to the Conscious Style Guide by Karen Yin . Yin , who won the 2016 Pam Robinson Prize at the ACES convention in March , also created AP vs . Chicago and is the style columnist for Copyediting .
The prize is given to “ an exceptional copy editor who helps further the craft in an era of competition .”
She was cited for her work promoting inclusive and sensitive language in editing . She speaks and writes on androgyny , sexist and racist language at universities , conferences and community events . She is also a celebrated novelist and consultant .
Yin attended a Dow Jones News Fund-sponsored summer high school workshop in southern California ; it was great to reconnect with her around one of her many accomplishments .
