Teaching about empathy
helped me learn it, too. While I
was in Paris I also did my own
reporting. So, when an editor
reached out asking me to find
a young man named Ali in the
camp, I put on my coat and
headed out the door.
It was only after I arrived that I
realized the folly of trying to find
“Ali” with nothing more than a
name and a Facebook photo. But
it was yes, and: One person saw
it, led me to another person and
a third. Within an hour Ali was
standing before me.
They weren’t journalists, but Ali’s
friends had known just who to
call. All I had to do was ask.
