22A FALL 2014 DJNF Adviser Profile: Mitch Eden, MJE Media/ School: The Kirkwood Call (newspaper), The Kirkwood Call.com Mitch Eden (online media), Pioneer (yearbook), Kirkwood HS, Kirkwood, Mo. Subjects taught: Journalism I, Magazine Journalistic Writing II (Honors), Newspaper Journalistic Writing II (Honors). Years advising: Newspaper: 21; Yearbook: 22. Advising mission: To help young adults become people of empathy and integrity who will lead, be responsible, and change the world for good. Motivate and empower! Reasons for becoming adviser: Well, since ESPN and the PGA Tour never called ... for selfish reasons. Advising allows me to continue learning journalism and be with kids all the time. The high school journalism classroom is unlike any classroom in the school. The energy and buzz is amazing. It is authentic learning at its best. Spends most time: I have two families. One at home, and one at my second home, KHS. That equals all my time. If I could add another hour to the day, I would. Administrative support: I am blessed to work in the Kirkwood School District where scholastic journalism is valued. From district administrators to KHS Principal Dr. Michael Havener, the philosophy is to support student journalism by letting students practice and exercise their First Amendments rights. KHS has earned the Journalism Education Association’s First Amendment Press Freedom Award eight of the past 10 years.
